So, big news. Spectacular new. Absolutely monumental news. I have decided to learn to sew. *insert audibly gasp here* Let me validate that by saying that sewing intimidates me. The few times I’ve had the courage to venture up to those whirring machines, I’ve been thoroughly scared away. Once, even, my 8 year nephew at the time told me what I was doing wrong. 8 years old! I am still a little sheepish about that story. Anyways, my darling mother has tried to teach me a couple of times over the years but I always quite vehemently refused. Maybe too much domesticity for the 14 year old me.
But now that domestic and me are usually in the same sentance quite comfortably, I have decided to tackle this. There is one problem though, see I have Vanderven blood running through my veins. See, that means that I want to do everything I try perfectly. Which does not go very well with learning to sew. Hmm, ah well, we’re also not ones to be scared off easily. So when my dear friend Nathalie invited me to join her and some friends who get together and sew once a week,I borrowed Amanda’s machine (she has good intentions just like me…must be a sister thing!) and toddled off to sewing group.
I looked at my machine, and then at Nat, and then back at the machine. She sensed my distress and helped me out, so I learnt to thread a machine, and different stiches and back stitching and a whole plethora of words that I hadn’t known before. I sewed a doo-hicky as my first project. If you can think of a use…let me know!
Then came The First Project. Yes, a real live sewing project. Tracey had a simple bag pattern for me to start with, Nathalie helped me with picking fabric and before I knew what had happened is was…Real Live Sewing Time. Soon the fabric was cut out, and like a baby bird hopping from the nest I started to sew. I pressed seams and pinned them, I backstiched and unpicked, I muttered and huffed all along and only a mere 6 hours later (note sarcasm…it probably should of only taken 3) it was finished. Just promise me you won’t look too closely at the seams!
I had a few stripes of extra fabric and I wanted to make a flower to sew onto the bag. The one’s online were all a bit complicated – needing glue dots and whoraah to finish, so I kinda adapted my own version of a fabric flower. I’ll post the step by step instructions tomorrow. Mostly because it’s so handy when other people post tutorials, I feel like I should give back
